In 1989/1990, the Diocese of Grahamstown was demarcated into two regions: the Northern and Southern Regions, under the episcopacy of Bishop David Russell, who was the Diocesan Bishop at the time. The Suffragan Bishop appointed to lead the Northern Region was Bishop Eric Pike in 1989, who later became the Bishop of Port Elizabeth in 1993. He was succeeded by Bishop Anthony Mdletshe in 1993, who eventually became the Bishop of Zululand in 1997, followed by Bishop Bethlehem Nopece in 1998, who later became the Bishop of Port Elizabeth in 2002.
Archbishop Thabo Cecil Makgoba also served as a Suffragan Bishop in the Northern Region in 2002 and initiated the process of the diocese multiplication. He later became the Bishop of Grahamstown 2004 and was subsequently appointed as the Archbishop of Cape Town. His successor, Bishop Ebenezer Ntlali, completed the process, leading to the establishment of the Diocese of Khahlamba. Following the establishment, Venerable Lawrence Nzwana served as the Vicar General, he led the process of the inauguration of the diocese, he was later succeeded by Honorary Canon Gordon Johnson who also served as the Vicar General after the inauguration.
The Diocese of Khahlamba was officially inaugurated in 2009, with St. Michael and All Angels Cathedral in Komani, Eastern Cape, serving as the mother church. The Cathedral was inaugurated under the leadership of Honorary Canon Reverend Reginald Morgan, who served as Acting Dean. The Very Reverend Zweledinga Archbold Mpuzi was appointed as the first Dean of the Cathedral, followed by the Right Reverend Siyabonga Sibongile Lionel Sibeko, who served as the second Dean of the Diocese and as Rector of the Cathedral Parish.
The diocese initially consisted of two archdeaconries—Queenstown and Aliwal North—and has since grown significantly, now comprising ten archdeaconries.
In 2010, after the first Elective Assembly was unable to elect a bishop, the Synod of Bishops elected Bishop Mazwi Tisani as the first Diocesan Bishop of Khahlamba. He was succeeded by Bishop Moses Thozamile Madywabe as the second Diocesan Bishop, who was elected in December 2017 and served until his passing in June 2023. In May 2024, Bishop Siyabonga Sibongile Lionel Sibeko was elected as the third and current Bishop of Khahlamba.
In 2002, under the leadership of Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, a Social Development Arm was established, originally named the Tswaranang Northern Region Resource Centre, now known as the Tswaranang Diocesan Resource Centre. It comprises five desks:
In addition, we are blessed with the Nondumiso Retreat Center, which was opened and blessed by Archbishop Thabo Makgoba in 2004. The center is located within and forms part of the Diocese of Khahlamba, under the Cacadu Archdeaconry, in Bholothwa. Among other objectives, it seeks to offer various types of retreats, including guild, group, and individual retreats.
The facility is open to and enjoyed by a wide range of users, including other Christian denominations, government departments, private sector businesses, non-profit organisations (NPOs), and individuals seeking a peaceful place of refuge.
The Nondumiso Retreat Center serves as a sacred space for prayer and spiritual reflection. It is also designed to facilitate study and learning, promote relaxation and renewal, and provide support for community development.
The center offers overnight accommodation for visitors. Meal services are available upon request at an additional cost. It provides meeting and conference rooms for discussions and gatherings. A dedicated church nearby serves as a sacred space for worship. The retreat center is committed to supporting the spiritual needs of the Parish and the Diocese.
